Tips for video recording

Video Formats, Resolution, etc

When recording the video for presentations, especially for playback via Zoom, make sure the following recommendations are in place.

  • Video format: mp4
  • Frame Rate: 30 fps
  • Video Resolution: 1080p (720p is acceptable, but higher is not necessary. Zoom sharing will decrease the resolution down to 1080p)
  • Audio : 44Khz, 96Kbps mono/192kbps stereo (using lesser is fine, unless you have specific audio features you need to emphasis )

In addition, make sure all images, video clips, slides, etc that are part of the presentation have comparable resolution. Using High Def graphics will increase the size of the file, but will not make it better. Remember, Zoom will decrease the resolution to 1080p ( 1920×1080) anyway.

Stage setups

In order to get good video/audio recordings, the stage has to be set with proper equipment. Use good/high quality cameras, microphones and lighting. Using tripods is recommended. If you do not have specialized equipment, there are few tricks you can use to get good results:

  • a lot of light: stay close to window, facing the incoming light
  • use headset: separate mic and headphones is better, but combined works as well
  • turn the noise down: make sure you are recording in quiet room, at least close the windows and doors.
